Summary :
- Honda donates 280 million yen (about USD 3.64 million) towards Thailand flood relief and recovery efforts.
- Already donated 200 sets of Honda GX160 engine, and kit to small boats.
- Planning to donate pumps, high-pressure water sprayers, generators, and other relief goods depending on the future situation in the impacted areas.
Amongst all the major automakers in Thailand, Automobiles Honda Thailand have been the worst affected, having their plant completely inundated by flood water. The rest of the automakers had to deal with disruption of supplies but sustained no damage to their own manufacturing facility.
In the face of such calamity, it is easy to only look inwards and to focus on one’s own immediate needs. While other manufacturers are busy finding alternative suppliers to resume production, Honda, despite having to deal with serious consequences of missing its targeted annual output, today announced its assistance to Thailand’s flood relief and recovery efforts. Something which much larger, and less affected manufacturers have yet to do.
Because Honda produces a wide variety of engines – from marine outboard motors to generators, Honda is just the right kind of partner the Thai government needs at this moment. Honda has since donated 200 sets of Honda GX160 engine which can be used to power anything from generators, water pumps, light industrial and cleaning equipments.
Manufacturer principal Honda Motor Co., Ltd itself is donating 30 million yen while Honda Group companies in Thailand is donating 100 million baht (approximately 250 million yen).
“Honda has been doing business in Thailand for 47 years, and we have long appreciated and valued the support and hard work of the people of Thailand. We are also very grateful for the tremendous support the people of Thailand provided to Japan following the major earthquake that struck the eastern part of Japan in March of this year. We would like to provide support and our wishes for the earliest possible relief and recovery in Thailand,” said Hiroshi Kobayashi, the managing officer and chief operating officer of regional operations (Asia & Oceania) of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
Honda also says it plans to donate pumps, high-pressure water sprayers, generators, and other relief goods depending on the future situation in the impacted areas.
Another manufacturer that have provided assistance is Chevrolet, which has collected donations from the public to schools in 10 provinces around Thailand. A convoy of the recently launched Chevrolet Colorado truck is currently on its way to deliver aid supplies to the 10 provinces.
Kudos to the folks at Honda, and also Chevrolet.
