2012 Porsche Boxster

Summary :

  • To debut in January 2012′s Detroit Motor Show
  • Boxster S to have 3.4-litre flat-six, similar to current Boxster but with improvements, including engine idle auto start stop function.
  • Entry level Boxster to feature a turbo-charged flat-four engine.
  • 7-speed PDK transmission available.

Porsche did not choose to unveil the 2012 Boxster in the recently concluded Frankfurt Motor Show, choosing to focus exclusively on the new 911. Instead, the Boxster will be unveiled at coming Detroit Motor Show in January 2012.

The latest spy shots, void of any disguise materials, shows the Boxster is production ready. In fact, the “spy shots” look more like a photo shoot session.

The sides now feature almost supercar like character lines, just compare with the existing Boxster in the photos below.

On the use of a flat-four engine instead of Porsche’s traditional flat-six, it’s inevitable and is only to be expected given to direction of government vehicle emission legislation. But this is not the first time Porsche used a flat-four.

In the past, Porsche have used flat-four engines first in the 912 (which looks almost exactly like a 911) and later in the 914. The gallery below includes pics of the classic 914 and 912.
